Recently our Chairman Dr Mike Osborne took part in the MEDIN hosted webinar titled “Interoperability in Action: Data Standards and Marine Applications” which explored the critical role of standardized data practices in enhancing marine data interoperability.
The session featured three expert presentations that collectively emphasized the importance of consistent data management across marine sectors.
Roseanna Wright (MEDIN) introduced the MEDIN Marine Data Standards and Guidelines, which aim to ensure high-quality, reusable marine data. She explained the structure and purpose of these standards, highlighting how they foster interoperability and support diverse marine applications—from environmental monitoring to policy-making.
Allan Jamieson (Ordnance Survey) discussed the broader challenges of geospatial data interoperability. He underscored the need for collaboration between data suppliers and users, especially as no single organization holds all necessary data. Jamieson advocates for consistent application of geospatial standards to bridge the gap between land and marine datasets, envisioning a future of seamless integration.
Mike Osborne (OceanWise) shared insights from 15 years of working with ports. His presentation included case studies demonstrating how ports have evolved in their use of marine data to enhance safety and operational efficiency. He outlined best practices in data management and emphasized the tangible benefits of adopting standardized approaches.
Together, the speakers illustrate how data standards are not just technical tools but strategic enablers of collaboration, innovation, and informed decision-making in marine environments.
