Growing interest in understanding water quality is leading many ports to explore new ways of monitoring conditions in and around their harbours. At Associated British Ports (ABP) Southampton, a new initiative will see six AquaTROLL 600 water‑quality sensors, supplied and installed by OceanWise, and deployed on navigational buoys to provide more detailed insight into turbidity and other key environmental parameters.
The AquaTROLL’s will collect data on factors such as turbidity — an increasingly important measure for busy ports where vessel movements, dredging, tidal flows and weather events can all influence the amount of suspended sediment in the water.
Having access to reliable, real‑time information is becoming a valuable tool for operational planning as environmental considerations continue to grow in importance.
The data collected will feed into Port‑Log, the environmental data platform from OceanWise used across the port to manage, visualise and share information from a range of sensors placed in and around the harbour. Built‑in alerts notify teams when thresholds are nearing limits or have been exceeded, helping marine operators stay informed about changing conditions.
OceanWise has been working with Associated British Ports (ABP) since 2014, supplying a range of products and services to its network of ports across the UK, from smaller seaports like Barrow to the large deep-water port at Southampton. This latest project forms part of a wider interest across the sector in gaining a more complete, day‑to‑day picture of local water conditions.
Katy Pozerskis, Key Account Manager at OceanWise, said:
“We are extremely proud to be working with ABP on this exciting new project and look forward to continuing to develop both our system and our relationship with this forward-thinking and hugely important customer.”
