Scottish GIS Workshop Success

Marine-Planning-Interactive OceanWise hosted a successful Marine Data Management and GIS Workshop at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on 23 May. Attendees were treated to a great programme covering topical cultural, scientific and technical matters of importance to Scotland including an great presentation about its year of Culture, History and Heritage, delving into the richness of its coasts and offshore space. Marine Scotland Science and Scottish Natural Heritage provided highlights about how OceanWise Marine Mapping data is supporting marine planning and tracking the movements of fish in Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s).

The increasing threat posed by organised crime, accidents, incidents and disasters to UK coasts, ports and harbours was highlighted by State21 with a plea to the relevant authorities to quickly develop Risk Assessment and Emergency Response plans to offset this growing problem. MEDIN provided an update on the increasing volumes of public and industry data being ingested into its Data Archive Centres (DAC’s) whilst SeaRoc Group explained how its SeaPlanner management software delivers real efficiencies in offshore renewable energy projects. OceanWise discussed how Port-Log.net is expanding environmental data sources for its real-time on-line publishing service whilst British Geological Survey (BGS) showed its products developed specifically to meet the needs of users requiring high resolution marine geological and geomorphological data.
